My last name says it all: Leslie Potter. I fell in love with the pottery wheel at age fourteen. It has been 37 years and my passion for teaching and creating pottery has only increased.
During my undergraduate at Elms College in Chicopee my minor was Art Therapy, where I spent most of my time on the pottery wheel. I created a 12 piece Asian inspired dinner set for my senior project where it was displayed at the College Library. During my first job as a special education teacher, I incorporated ceramics into my lessons and continued to use ceramics as a therapeutic tool for my students.
Through the years, I have taught pottery classes at camps, schools, pottery studios, and at professional development days. I have had my own mini pottery studio with a kick wheel that I still treasure today. I am currently a Therapeutic Art Teacher for students with behavioral and emotional challenges. I have the pleasure of coming back to Feet of Clay in Brookline, MA as a part time pottery instructor after being a member years ago.
Spinning on the pottery wheel allows individuals to become mindful in the moment and forget about outside stressors. Watching something take shape right before your eyes can bring a feeling of accomplishment and exhilaration. Pottery has increased my self-esteem, a way to express myself, has provided an outlet for creativity, and has become a part of who I am besides having it be part of my name.
